Celaena Sardothien owes her reputation to Arobynn Hamel. He gave her a home at the Assassins' Guild and taught her the skills she needed to survive.

Arobynn's enemies stretch far and wide - from Adarlan's rooftops and its filthy dens, to remote islands and hostile deserts. Celaena is duty-bound to hunt them down. But behind her assignments lies a dark truth that will seal her fate - and cut her heart in two forever.

I apologise in advance for the abundance of hashtags and inability to turn off capslock. #sorrynotsorry #letthefangirlingbegin #hashtag

The Assassin's Blade is a collection of the five Throne of Glass prequel novellas. The novellas are ordered chronologically, so they can kind of just be thought of as one continuous story. Basically the "first" novel in the Throne of Glass series. And I must say, EVERYONE who has read Throne of Glass should be reading this book. Or getting the individual novellas in ebook form, whichever. They add so much more to the series, in that you get to see how Celaena arrives at where she is at the start of Throne of Glass. And you meet Sam. SAM. SAAAAMMMM!

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
So this is the first book where we're introduced to Sam, and what an introduction! Don't you just adore love-hate relationships? GAH, so epic. We also get an introduction to Celaena's more human side- she's an assassin, but she does have a (somewhat) intact moral compass. Basically, swashbuckling and shenanigans.

The Assassin and the Healer
The shortest of the novellas- but still an interesting one which gives more insight into the way Celaena thinks. Probably the only major downfall of this novella was that there was no Sam. lol.

The Assassin and the Desert
Another novella with a sorrowful lack of Sam. On the bright side, we get to see a lot of badassery from Celaena. You might remember from Throne of Glass (if you've read it) that there is a bit of lack of Celaena doing assassin-like activities, so if you'd like a bit of proof that she is actually a bamf then you should go for this novella. Or Crown of Midnight. Or both. I recommend going for both. (Also, if you've read CoM, Jesus, the foreshadowing!)

The Assassin and the Underworld
The focus of this novella, unlike the others, is more so on the romance than on the development of Celaena's character. Although I suppose that developing the former would technically also aid in the development of the latter. We also perhaps see the darker side of Celaena's mentor/foster father Arobynn- ultimately setting things up for the conclusion of The Assassin and the Empire.

Characters introduced in the novellas who I feel will turn up some time in the Throne of Glass series
(btw it's possible these people might have turned up in ToG/CoM and I just didn't notice #bookamnesia)
- Rolfe the Pirate Lord
- Yrene the Healer
- Ansel and possibly Ilias from The Assassin and the Desert. (btw Ilias better not turn up and ruin Chaolena or desks WILL BE FLIPPED)
- Farran the douchebag from The Assassin and the Empire
- Arobynn the f***ing bastard King of Assassins

Before you ask, HECK YES, this book is worth getting. The novellas are surprisingly long, so instead of thinking of it as a collection of novellas, you should think of it as a complete book. If you're a fan of Throne of Glass and don't get this book, I will be personally offended (lol jks. But seriously get a copy of this book. You certainly won't regret it.)

haha I should have written a warning: do not eat orange slices while reading review
Oh did you end up getting Throne of Glass? I seem to recall it wasn't at B&N when you went there or sth from one of your weekly recap posts #stalker
Don't really want to say too much in terms of Sam/Chaol, but know that I ship both of them with Celaena :P

I stole a friend's BN account and got the free 2-day shipping so it showed up yesterday :D I'm 100 pages in and loving it! I still don't see how people like Dorian - right now he's just a huge d-bag.

...

though I bet he ends up like Sturmhond, doesn't he? A player at first but underneath is super incredible?

WOOHOO! Hooray for free 2 day shipping! I wish we had that kind of thing in Aus, but alas, it seems to be 3-5 days. Still fairly quick I guess :)

I personally really love Dorian! As a character though, not as a love interest for Celaena haha. There are some really awesome twists to do with him in CoM :D
Also there are some awesome things that happen with him in ToG. I guess you might have reached those bits by now :)

Okay not that you meet Sam, does that mean it's going to be a love square, with three guys vying for Calaena's attention? :P I haven't read Crown of Midnight yet, so I think I'll be able to read this one without any problem, as it is a prequel. I'm so excited about it because so many bloggers have been raving about it left and right! And following social media etiquette, it's a good sign when one uses a lot of hashtag to portray their feels HAHAHA. Awesome review!!

Well, not going to say too much regarding the romance, but I ship both Sam and Chaol with Celaena haha. I love Dorian too, but not as a love interest for Celaena :P
Yeah you can definitely read this one before reading CoM! I actually read the novellas straight after reading ToG :)
Ah yes, social media etiquette ;)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH I WANT THIS WHY CAN'T I HAVE IT YET STUPID BUYING BAN HKSKLSHDKS

Good little tid bits. Though I must admit I only scanned them (I want to go into these with as little knowledge as possible). And in regards to the characters you think will return: I have heard mention some will. Mostly on Sarah J Maas's blog and on her pinterest (Ansel, Yrene, and Arobynn are the main ones I remember being mentioned). I really want to meet them kjkshfdskjfhs

:( :( :( sad times! Almost tempted to buy you a copy because this is a book that every ToG fan should own! Alas, I have bought too many books recently so I've put myself on a mini ban until April. Pretty sure it's not going to last though lolz. We'll see....

Yeah, I actually did see that post after writing this review and I was like *fistpumps* totally got the predictions correct haha

YES. I just bought this one and now I'm even more excited to get to it. I didn't think I would like Sam because of my love for Chaol and Dorian but it sounds like I'm bound to love him whether I like it or not :) Love Celaena when she's being all badass so I will definitely enjoy these!

Definitely! Besides, Chaol/Dorian and Sam are in different timelines, so it's totally fine to ship them at the same time :P

Nara . . . you get me. I read all of the prequels prior to ToG, and then I chased all of the pieces of the Healer all over the internet before reading CoM, and I. Love. Them. ALL. This was like reading my own thoughts from SAAAAMMMM! all the way to #mynameiscelaenasardothien #iwillnotbeafraid. Well met, soul sister ;)

Woohoo!
THE PREQUELS ARE INCREDIBLE. I'm so glad Sarah wrote them because otherwise we wouldn't have such a good understanding of where Celaena came from and omg SAMMMMMMMMMMM :D
My recent post The Search for the Panacea [4]
If all the novellas are in a book, then I need to get this book and read them while I'm waiting for book three. Done!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics
