Winning what you want may cost you everything you love.

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. Kestrel has other ideas.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

The first novel in The Winner's Trilogy is a story of rumours, lies and deadly games with everything at stake.
Review by Nara

"And rather light of purse, I'd say." The pointy-chinned woman snickered. "Looks like someone's suffering the Winner's Curse."
Kestrel turned to her. "What do you mean?"
"You don't come to auctions often, do you? The Winner's Curse is when you come out on top of the bid, but only by paying a steep price."
I have a minor quibble and the minor quibble is this: dude, who the heck is going around marketing this series as a high fantasy, because that so ain't right. Well, I suppose, depending on the definition of "high fantasy" that you use, it could be considered one. It is set in an imaginary world. However, by my own definition (which is a fantasy that's set in an imaginary world), The Winner's Curse is most definitely not a high fantasy. There is absolutely no fantasy aspect whatsoever. No magic, no fairies, no vampires/werewolves, nothing. So misleading...

That's not to say that this book was a bad book. Not at all! Despite there being no fantasy elements, The Winner's Curse had plenty of other interesting aspects- including political intrigue, well developed characters and a fantastic romance- all of which made for a truly excellent read.

The world building was fairly good. It certainly wasn't as great as I'd expected, seeing as though I'd seen several claims of "stunning", "phenomenal" and "incredible" world building, but it was good enough. I suppose a lot of the time the world building of a high fantasy relies on how well the magic system is developed, and seeing as though there was no fantasy element in this book, my view of the world building may have been skewed. That being said, I think the world that Rutkoski has created was still quite intriguing. It's one exulting in war and segregation, and I definitely look forward to seeing how it will be explored in sequels.

The romance was....*contented sigh*. It was so nicely done. Granted, it was slightly cliched, but who gives a damn when it's just so well developed! With not a hint of instalove in sight, this slow burning romance was definitely one I was shipping hard. And....NO LOVE TRIANGLE! That's always a cause for celebration.

THAT ENDING AJDSFKASLKDF! I knew something like that was coming, but who knew it'd be so freaking frustrating. AND THE TRUE MEANING OF THE TITLE AHHH! Sad times. It's certainly got me making grabby hands for the sequels. I very much look forward to seeing how Rutkoski will resolve the...shall we say, "dilemmas".

Incredible

I AM SO GLAD TO SEE YOU ENJOYED THIS ONE NARA!

I know a lot of people have mentioned the 'it's not actually high fantasy' thing so I am going to keep that in mind when I finally tackle this one!

Great review, Nara!! :)

WOOHOO!
Well I guess by the strictest definition, it is technically high fantasy, but seriously, there is no actual fantasy in it haha. And dang it, I so wanted there to be magic or something cool in there. Still, it was a great book anyway :D

Oh how I looooved it, LOVED IT! I didn't see that it was high Fantasy, I'm not generally a fan of Fantasy whatsoever, it felt more like a dystopian to me. Everything just clicked (kinda reminded me of the same contentment as when after I read These Broken Stars), and I can't wait for book two either.

Awesome review Nara. I so wanna reread it already.

It does have a bit of a dystopian feel! Although it's funny because it actually felt like a high fantasy to me, except clearly there was a lack of actual fantasy haha. The title makes it sound like a high fantasy as well!

I have been convinced!!! I avoided all mentions of this book because it was so hyped up, but now that the craze has calmed down I'm more apt to read reviews. And since we're creepy book twinsies, I'm sure I'll love this one as well :D

So glad to see you loved this, Nara! I didn't think of it as a high fantasy novel, either. But the romance! Arin... <3 The ending definitely made me tear up a bit. Oh dear sequel, where art thou!?

Yay I am so glad you warned me of the not being high fantasy thing, because I would have picked it up expecting it too. I need to read this still, and there's been so much raving about it! Lovely review Nara.

I know right! Doesn't it really seem like there'd be some sort of magic system? Especially because of "curse" being in the title. Still, it's pretty good despite the lack of actual fantasy :)

It's great! Especially the romance side of things ;)

It's really interesting how the genre of this one is being debated! I guess I learnt more of textbook definition, and so I didn't ever NOT think of this as fantasy. But I can see how the lack of magic etc. makes it tricky to define. I don't know if you've seen this post: http://www.rtbookreviews.com/rt-daily-blog/fantas... - it's an interesting piece from the author about her thoughts on the genre.

Anyway, I'm SO glad you loved this one. I thought it was brilliant too and fell head over heels for the romance. I agree that a lack of a love triangle is always a cause for celebration. ;) That ending though! I'm kind of nervous about what might (or might not!) happen in the next book, but I know I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Great review, Nara!

It's interesting how she calls it a "fantasy with no fantasy", which is true by the technical definition of high fantasy, I suppose :)

Gosh, the ending! I seriously can't wait to see what Rutkoski will do with the romance and the characters in general :D

l can't wait to read this book; I've seen so much of love for it all around the blogosphere! Great review, and thanks for letting me know it isn't really high fantasy, Nara :)

well technically it is high fantasy (by the strictest definition, since it's set in a fantasy world), but there was pretty much no actual fantasy aspect whatsoever. The author describes it as a "fantasy with no fantasy". lol
Hope you enjoy it when you get round to reading it! :)

I read this a little while back, and I still remember how much I absolutely loved it! I agree...the romance, characterization and world-building are all so well-done; and the writing was absolutely gorgeous. I agree...it's more of a dystopian with a bit of a historical feel to it with a fantasy background. Thank you so much for sharing, and, as always, BRILLIANT review! <3 So glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! <3

Gosh, the writing was beautiful! I'm definitely going to go hunt down her other books :D
It did feel a bit like a dystopian! But it also did feel like a high fantasy bar the lack of actual fantasy aspect haha :P

I agree, I wouldn't really call this one "phenomenal world-building" because at the end of the book, the world still felt vague to me. There really wasn't much effort done to describe the world, so I was dissatisfied with that aspect. On the other hand, the romance was a slow burn that I looooved. I can't wait for the third book (I did rate it 3 stars, but I'm excited nonetheless! XD)

No kidding! Not quite sure why some people are calling the world building "phenomenal". Clearly those people haven't read any Sanderson ;)

I've been trying to control my spending because I just bought a shitload of books and they're beginning to pile up both in my real bookshelf and in my Kindle, so this review was EXACTLY what I needed. THANKS SO MUCH, NARA. ;D Seriously, though, I don't know how many five-star reviews I've seen for this beauty right here. It's making me feel restless! D:

Huh, it's strange that people have been calling this "high fantasy." I guess it's because there are empires and generals and wars involved, and those things are usually found in fantasy books. Right? But yeah, without any magical elements... a bit of a stretch really. I love that the book managed to engage you politically, though! Usually, I have no interest in politics whatsoever, but when done right in stories, they can really help add more depth to the world building.

To be honest, I don't really mind when a romance is cliche. It just has to be believable and have none of that dramatic, insta-love shit that's appearing so often these days. Oh, and not forgetting an absolutely swoon-worthy love interest. And yaaaaass -- no love triangle! Definitely a good sign. :D

Lemme guess: this book ends with a cliffhanger. Am I right or am I right? Haha.

Anyway, great review! I'll definitely be getting my hands on this one, once my reading pile has diminished significantly and once I've cleared enough space on my shelf to fill up again. So glad you enjoyed this one. I just hope my expectations aren't too high now!

MEGGGG! I HAVE MISSED YOU AND YOUR AMAZINGLY LONG COMMENTS! :D

Oh god, story of my life. Before blogging I never used to have unread books on my shelves, but now they're just piling up... D: Yeah, I read this one quite late (because it came out late in Australia), but thankfully the hype monster didn't completely attack me haha. Hopefully it doesn't attack you either :P

Actually, by the textbook definition of high fantasy, it technically is one. Since it's set in a fictional world. It's just that I happen to not really agree with the textbook definition :P With the word "curse" being in the title, I was seriously expecting much more actual magic and all that, but nope. Not a thing.

You may be right about the cliffhanger...maybe...okay you're right. lol
